The restorative effects of nature have long been proven, and ‘bringing the Outside in’ has been a huge recent Interiors trend. Now, the arrival of the Summer months allows us the opportunity to ‘take the Inside out’.
Create outdoor rooms either in existing spaces such as patios or decks, or simply use a pretty corner of your garden or lawn. String bunting around the space to create a party atmosphere, if you enjoy a creative project try making your own using fabric remnants, or block printing, which I used to make the bunting in the picture below. Add lighting to carry your festivities into the night; festoon lighting and fairy lights now come with outdoor battery or solar options if you don’t have an outdoor socket. String them overhead, through trees or along hedges for a magical effect after sunset. Save old glass jars and tie florist wire around the necks so you can fill them with flowers or candles and hang in the trees or along a fence.
Style your outdoor room as you would inside – think layers and textures, adding cushions, throws, rugs and pouffes to ensure guests are warm and snug. Carry out larger pieces of furniture such as arm chairs for a touch of luxury and extra comfort that blurs the lines between your indoor and outdoor space.
Don’t stick to melamine picnicware for outdoor dining, risk a few breakages and take your nice pieces outside, laying the table with linens and china with lots of candles and freshly picked flowers. Weave foliage along the centre of the table to create a botanical runner and vary the height of vases and candle holders to add interest. Mix and match tableware, but stick to muted tones with a pop of colour for a relaxed, but stylish setting.
Take the pressure off a little by keeping food tasty, simple and fresh, piling big wooden sharing platters for people to tuck into and don’t be afraid to ask guests to bring a dessert. End the evening around a fire pit toasting marshmallows and star gazing, enjoying the scent of the garden and the beauty of nature.
